The sunset photo in the header looks like a stock image. But it’s actually one I took in 2012 in El Salvador, when we were camping in a little igloo-shaped hut across from a volcano.

Wrestling Rocinante
Two weeks ago, we pulled into Santa Ana, the second-largest city in El Salvador. It was late afternoon, and Rocinante was coughing, gasping and stalling as we came into town, looking for a hostel. The first place we tried was … Continue reading

A hit and a miss
Yuca fritters with syrup and chicha, an alcoholic beverage made from rice. I ate three servings of the fritters, but the chicha I ended up pouring down the sink, where I’m sure it scoured the drain clean.
Over the Volcano
As has been mentioned here once or twice before, Joe likes to jump into water, whether from high places or whilst sporting SCUBA gear. Elizabeth seems most in her element in the dozens of museums we’ve visited, or winding through … Continue reading

And Into Perquín
… continued from part one Our approach to Perquín was so slow, as you’ll recall, that it became clear we would not arrive before dark, and that we’d need alternate arrangements for our evening. The logical place to stop would … Continue reading

La Esperanza to Perquín
You’ve all read the story of the long, dusty, bouncy and stall-ridden trek from Quetzaltenango to Salamá, in Guatemala. If you haven’t, go ahead, I’ll wait here. Well, we’ve managed to do it one (or two, maybe three) better. We’d … Continue reading

An Island by Any Other Name
If you just read the word Útila, the name of an island in Honduras Bay, it’s pronounced OO-tee-lah. It is, after all, a Spanish word, and it tells you how to pronounce it, since the stress is not on the … Continue reading
